whammy bar doesn’t fit?
I just got a SX custom handmade vintage strat with the whammy bar. But the whammy bar doesn’t seem to fit into the hole; it’ll go in, sometimes it will lock but I can’t screw it in without it falling out. I’m sure the whammy bar is the one that’s supposed to go with the strat. Anyone know what I should do? I’m thinking of buying a new whammy bar, but how do I measure it?
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information on the SX Guitars website, and the user reviews are sketchy. From the pictorials, the bridge appears to have the vintage six-screw pivot-point arrangement, which would typically indicate that the bar screws into the tremolo block (counterweight). If both the bar and the tremolo block are indeed threaded, check to make sure there is nothing blocking the counterweight threads. It is possible that they included a spring in the bottom (like Fender does), which has shifted up in the hole preventing contact with the threads. If the bar and block are not threaded at all, then they are using a design similar to the Fender deluxe bridge, which has a set screw (a.k.a., Allen or recessed-hex style) in the counterweight to provide pressure against the bar for retention. If this is a brand-new guitar, you should have the right parts; if not, the previous owner may have broken the original threaded bar. In that case, you will need to take the tremolo block to your local hardware store and try different size screws to find the right fit for a replacement bar; it will probably be a 10-24, 10-32, 5mm-.8, or 6mm thread, which are the most common in general use.
