is it true that the eiffel tower only exerts as much pressure as a man sitting on a chair?
someone just randomly said that in my french class. i dont believe it.
The Eiffel Tower rests on four massive pilings set into very soft, swampy earth. The high moisture content of the ground and the softness of the soil in the specified location were among the basic problems confronted by Gustav Eiffel in designing the tower.
Because of the soft ground, he had to design the foundation under the tower so that is spreads the tower’s weight and the force of wind loading over quite a large area. Each of the “feet” of the tower spreads the load out over several acres. The result is that in any given square of 18 inches or so, the weight load from the tower is about 200 pounds, which is comparable to the soil loading of a man sitting in a chair.
Of course this refers to each small section of the ground under the tower. The total weight is still many hundreds of tons.
